NPCI's CEO Dilip Asbe revealed that 50 new payment apps, including Navi, BharatPe, and Supermoney , are eager to join the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system. This surge comes despite the lack of a revenue model for fintechs, as UPI transactions currently have no fees for consumers. Asbe mentioned that an MDR (merchant discount rate) may be introduced for larger merchants, potentially providing companies with a revenue stream. He also addressed concerns about market dominance, with PhonePe and Google Pay controlling 87% of UPI transactions, while AI technology will boost security for users.
