Maldives Tourism Shift: Indian Visitors Decline as China Surges

In the first quarter of 2024, Maldives witnessed a significant drop in Indian tourists by nearly 40%, contrasting with a remarkable 200% increase in visitors from China. This shift, highlighted by the Ministry of Tourism's report, marks a substantial change in Maldives' tourism landscape. India, once a top contributor, now ranks sixth in tourist arrivals, while China claims the top spot with an 11% share. The decline in Indian visitors coincides with tensions between India and Maldives, influenced by political and diplomatic factors.
